Hello, I have not done a show before, I just want to make sure there aren't any qualifications needed to compete in this show?
Ryan Irwin
September 21st, 2016 21:22
You are correct, there are no qualifications other than to adhere to the banned substances guidelines that you can find here: http://nanbf.net/banned-substances/

Are there age and weight requirements?
Ryan Irwin
September 23rd, 2016 12:32
No. There are teen and collegiate divisions and Masters (40+). The open and novice classes will have height classes pending number of competitors in each respective class.

My wife is 50 years old and would like to do figure/ bikini. Is there a master's division ? If so what are the age requirements?? Also how about the men's division? Thanks
Ryan Irwin
October 26th, 2016 20:20
Steve, thanks for the inquiry! Yes there is a masters division for figure, bikini or men's bodybuilding or men's physique. There is 40+ (which is open to competitors 40 and up). If there is interest, we might offer a 50+ division as well but there is no age cap on the 40+.

To be in the show do we have to purchase a NANBF card? Can we get it when signing up for this show? Thanks!
Ryan Irwin
October 26th, 2016 20:15
Nicole, You purchase the NANBF card/membership online at http://nanbf.net/register/. You will get it emailed to you and you can print but you won't physically get a card in the mail. The membership is good for 12 calendar months.

The best way to stay informed and current is to "like" the Natural Iowa Facebook page here, we'll post updates including when the online entry is available: https://www.facebook.com/naturaliowa/

Is there a Teen Physique or just Teen Body Building? And does Men's Physique go off of weight class or Height?
Ryan Irwin
January 22nd, 2017 20:11
Sam, Teen is available for all categories except Classic Physique. The men's physique goes off high class. Thanks for the question!

January 28th, 2017 14:26

Is there many competitors at the 5" 7' height category? Also if there is only one person in a height category do they just ultimately take first or will they not be able to compete? Thank You!
Ryan Irwin
February 11th, 2017 8:14
Good question. We will split height classes evenly as possible per the height of the respective classes.

Hey, I've never competed before. I'm turning 17 this month. I would like to know if teens are able to compete in this competition?
Ryan Irwin
February 17th, 2017 9:09
Yes, there are teen divisions available. In addition, they are eligible to compete in all other classes (novice, open).
Ben Puttmann
February 20th, 2017 17:41
What are the requirements of entering the men's bodybuilding novice category? Having never entered it before or having never won it before?
Ryan Irwin
February 20th, 2017 20:43
To be eligible to compete in novice, one must not have won their class with 3 or more competitors in any class. Good question!
Ben Puttmann
February 22nd, 2017 18:18
For show format, is each class presented only once during their scheduled time (i.e. Men's bodybuilding from 8:30-11) and awarded at the same time, or is there a night show where competitors are presented again and then awarded?
Ryan Irwin
February 22nd, 2017 18:57
Good question Ben. Everything will be done for the respective category during that time (including awards). After your category is completed, you can enjoy watching the rest of the competition or leave the venue and celebrate. All categories are welcome to the after party in the evening at the host hotel.

So now the competition is being held at the Hoyt. I had received an email stating the Marriott in West Des Moine and of course made reservations through the dicount link. My son is registered and paid for through the registration icon on your website. NOW you say the registration for the event is available. He has even made an appointment for the lie detector test. I would contact someone directly to confirm both his registration and location but I can find no contact information.
Ryan Irwin
February 24th, 2017 13:02
Thanks for reaching out. The Marriott is the location of the host hotel, which is where the check-in/registration will be along with the polygraph. The actual competition is at the Hoyt Sherman Place. That said, you are good with making reservations at the Marriott. I left a voice mail on the number I have with your son's registration, please feel free to call back or via email (naturaliowamuscle@gmail.com) if you have further questions, thanks! -Ryan

I've registered for the show (men's bodybuilding novice, open, IA open) but it's unclear when I will need to perform my posing routing and for how long. The continuous format makes it seems like all classes go through prejudging then right into finals. I looked for more information on routines on the website but couldn't find anything. Thanks Ryan.
Ryan Irwin
February 25th, 2017 9:12
Good question Ben. All classes in that category (bodybuilding for example) will go thru their mandatories. After that, you will do your routine 1 time (up to 60 seconds). Everyone will do their routines. After that, they awards will be given out for the respective classes and overall awards will be determined.

Who is doing the spray tan this year? I'm just curious to see if I will be able to get sprayed by the business who is with the show since I can't get to Des Moines until late the night before the show.
Ryan Irwin
March 19th, 2017 7:24
W-right Rayz by Yvonne Inc will be providing tanning, makeup and hair services. When competitors entry, they will get all the information they need to book appointments for whatever services they want. Having many competitors out of state, they will be at the host hotel and will have both early and late appointments available to get competitors in. They will also be working the day of the contest to get everyone ready in time to go on stage.

Is there something special about a competition tan or would a spray tan from my local salon be the same?
Ryan Irwin
April 17th, 2017 20:15
It depends on the local salon. A competition tan is very dark and the spray tanner also applies a 'glaze' to help highlight the muscles onstage. Most of the spray tans offered in the local salon's doesn't get that dark. Additionally, the official spray tanner will be stationed backstage at the NANBF Natural Iowa and can do last minute touch ups to competition tans.

What makes the figure collegiate category different from figure open or figure novice? Also is there a time schedule of the even (like which classes are on stage at what times)?
Ryan Irwin
April 20th, 2017 12:29
Collegiate (in any category) is open only to those enrolled full time in college. A detailed schedule will be posted once all entries are received so we know what class sizes are. Schedule will also be posted here: https://www.facebook.com/events/679895518849670/

Hello. I'm doing a polygraph this Friday 5/5 one week before my next one for a different show. I heard that I do not need to do another since so close. Is that true?
Ryan Irwin
April 30th, 2017 15:15
Polygraphs are only able to be used if it's a NANBF sanctioned contest within 30 days. If that is the case, please have the promoter reach out to us at naturaliowainfo@gmail.com to validate.

April 30th, 2017 16:15
Are there certain poses that can't be preformed in bikini t-walk? Such as npc poses and others? Or is it limited to certain ones?
Ryan Irwin
May 1st, 2017 20:31
The individual presentation portion for NANBF Bikini competitions is a stage walk. This portion of the show is for the crowd and gives the competitor a chance to win a “Best Presenter” or “Best Poser” award. Competitors walk out to House music of the promoter’s choice and perform a T-walk. A T-walk consists of walking out to rear center stage and pausing briefly in a stance of choice. Competitors then walk up to front center stage and then walk to stage left and pause briefly in a stance of choice, then walk to stage right and pause briefly in a stance of choice, then walk to the front center of the stage and pause briefly in a stance of choice, and finally walk off stage diagonally to the side from which they entered. The walk resembles a T, which explains how it got its name. Individual presentations should be done tastefully and be conducive to a family atmosphere. Bodybuilding-type poses, fitness moves (like push-ups) and costumes/props should be avoided. http://nanbf.net/bikini-division/ for more information, thanks!
